TABE® Testing
Job Corps requires all students to take the Test for Basic Adult Education® (TABE), a series of standardized tests designed to test your current knowledge base. You will take the initial series of TABE® tests during your first week on center and follow-up tests every one to three months until you meet the minimum requirements. While at Job Corps, your academic achievement is measured by the increase in your TABE® scores.
Literacy
Designed to improve your reading comprehension, language, and study skills. There are two components: Basic Reading and Graded Reading. Your starting point in the program is based on your needs, which are determined by the TABE® test .The Literacy class is structured to prepare your for the GED/High School Completion programs. A TABE® score of 567 is required to complete the literacy requirement.
Numeracy
Designed to teach the essentials, the class is designed to meet the individual needs of each student. This class will improve basic math skills including whole numbers, decimals, fractions, percentages, pre-algebra, and consumer math. A score of 566 is required to complete the numeracy requirements.
GED
General Education Development - designed to provide students with a high school equivalency diploma. The completion of the GED program certifies that the student has a basic knowledge and skills base in Writing, Social Studies, Language Arts, Science and Mathematics. The GED program is available to all students who have not completed high school. All literacy requirements must be completed before entry to the GED class and numeracy requirements must be completed before taking the Mathematics portion of the GED.
High School Diploma
The Gerald R. Ford Job Corps, in conjunction with the Grand Rapids Public School System, offers a High School Diploma (HSD) Program. All GED courses taken count toward a high school diploma for those who enroll in the High School Diploma Program. The completion of a GED meets a student's HSD proficiency test.
Advanced Career Training
The Advanced Career Training Program (ACT) is designed to enhance the employability of students who show an interest and demonstrate a potential to succeed in higher education. Gerald R. Ford Job Corps students have an opportunity to attend Grand Rapids Community College to obtain an Associate Degree. Students interested in attending college must complete the highest level of their vocational trade and must apply for an ACT slot. If accepted, ACT students may live on center while attending college and working. Students may also apply for ACT in their vocational trade at other Job Corps Centers offering such training.
